ORIGINS OF THE SCHOLARSHIP
Originally known as the Latino/a Scholarship Fund, the José F. Silva ’84 Endowed Memorial Scholarship was founded in 1994 and endowed in 2000 to attract and empower future change makers from the Latinx community. This scholarship supports the academic and professional development of Oxy’s Latinx students as a means to enhance their leadership skills, and to promote and celebrate Latinx cultural heritage within the campus community and beyond.
EMPOWERING THE FUTURE
In partnership with Occidental College’s Latino/a Alumni Association (OCLAA), the José F. Silva ’84 Endowed Memorial Scholarship is awarded to three recipients (sophomore, junior, & senior) annually. During their first year, freshmen have an opportunity to meet and get acquainted with the community, and later apply for this additional funding. Silva Scholars are chosen on the basis of their commitment toward social justice, demonstrated leadership, academic excellence, financial need, and involvement within the Latinx community. Returning Scholars are eligible for award renewal.
INCREASE YOUR IMPACT FOR GOOD
With 74% of Oxy students receiving financial aid, endowed scholarship support is critical to keeping an Oxy education
accessible for talented students from diverse socioeconomic, and cultural backgrounds. As part of The Oxy Campaign For Good, your gift will open doors to life-changing opportunities and serve as a direct investment in the next generation of future leaders.

ABOUT JOSE SILVA
Jose Francisco Silva is among our most cherished alumni whose legacy of service continues to inspire the Oxy community. After receiving degrees in Spanish literature and economics, Jose spent 25 years at Raytheon where he was known for his professional success and more significantly, for his leadership of community service and diversity programs. He started mentoring programs to inspire under-served youth to pursue STEM careers and co-founded Raytheon’s national Hispanic Organization for Leadership and Advancement. He also founded Occidental’s Latino Alumni Association (OCLAA) and served on the Board of Governors. In 2008, Jose was killed in a tragic accident. Following his passing, Oxy’s Latino Scholarship Fund was renamed the Jose Silva Memorial Scholarship to commemorate his legacy.

The people who make the José F. Silva Endowed Memorial Scholarship a reality made it possible for me to receive an education I would otherwise not have been able to receive. In return, I found my passions. This scholarship gave me the opportunity to be the first to graduate college in my family and now pursue a path toward my PhD.” - Maria Hernandez ‘19
